Superhero movies are becoming more and more popular throughout the years. This year, DC continued its push to rival Marvel in the film industry. On this list, you can definitely expect Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe favorites, along with other interesting entries.
Aside from the crowd favorites, this list also features standalone movies that captured their respective audiences. Many of these entries are based on comics. However, you will be delighted to find a non-comic film as well.
If you are a big fan of superhero movies, you surely contributed to the worldwide gross earnings of some of these films. Without further ado, here are the top 10 highest-grossing superhero films in 2019. Check them out below.
10. Batman: Hush
Gross earnings: $3.6 million
First on our list is Batman: Hush, an animated movie released by Warner Home Video in August. It was directed by Justin Copeland, the director of another animated movie Wonder Woman: Bloodlines released in October 2019. It also performed great with $1.1 million in gross earnings.
It follows the Caped Crusader as he deals with a stealthy stalker. Based on one of the arcs in the comic books, this film also features other members of the Batman Family, as well as Batman’s trusted and closest associate, Superman.
Gross earnings: $33.1 million
We are all familiar with how Superman came to Earth as a baby and became everyone’s favorite superhero later on. Now, imagine the same scenario, except instead of becoming a superhero, the child becomes more of a villain. Brightburn explores this possibility.
Directed by David Yarovesky, this film shows what happens when Superman falls into Earth with a different disposition. While technically not featuring Superman, the film takes a similar narrative to offer a more sinister version of the scenario.
Gross earnings: $40.79 million
As a reboot of the 2004 and 2008 Hellboy films, both directed by Guillermo del Toro, Neil Marshall’s 2019 film seeks to introduce the half-demon to a new breed of audience. Starring David Harbour of Stranger Things fame, this movie is seen by fans as an excellent reboot.
Based on Dark Horse comics’ Nazi-hating Cambion, the film follows Hellboy to the countryside in England where he must strive to save the world from ending too soon. For many fans, this film offers a fresh take on the character with minimal disappointments reboots are known for.
Gross earnings: $245.3 million
This movie came together more than a decade after the release of the initial film Unbreakable. Back in 2000, director M. Night Shyamalan (known for The Sixth Sense) released Unbreakable which introduced us to David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis).
In 2016, he released Split which completed the roster of characters that will make the superhero thriller movie Glass. This movie takes us through some twists and turns characteristic of Shyamalan’s works.
6. Dark Phoenix
Gross earnings: $246.36 million
Two years after the release of Logan in 2017, the mutants come back with an exciting story for comic book fans and film fans alike. Viewers are in for a treat as the film highlights one of the most beloved characters in the X-Men (and Marvel) universe.
In the past X-men films, we saw Jean Grey struggling with her powers. In the Dark Phoenix, she becomes more powerful yet more unstable. In this movie, the X-Men are forced to face one of the most powerful adversaries they will fight.
Gross earnings: $363.66 million
Coming in at number five is DCEUs entry into this list, Shazam! Grossing more than $360 million, fans definitely looked forward to this movie, especially as he is known as part of the Justice League in comics. Not so familiar with him? The reason for this may be that he is formerly called Captain Marvel. Yup, just like that Captain from the other franchise.
In fact, he is the first one to be called Captain Marvel until the comic book world’s most known copyright battle which led to the world’s mightiest mortal being called Shazam instead. It was a long legal battle that involved a smaller publisher Fawcett Comics, Marvel Comics (formerly Atlas) and DC Comics (formerly National Comics Publication).
Gross earnings: $1.05 billion
Another entry from DC (but not DCEU), this dark film is critically acclaimed for its strong message and images. Joaquin Phoenix showed a wide range of acting in this film, which made the character study far grittier and more interesting.
In fact, the film has been nominated in four categories at the Golden Globe Awards. However, don’t expect this film to be part of the DCEU as it has its own Joker played by Jared Leto. Good news, though, because Phoenix is open for a sequel.
3. Captain Marvel
Gross earnings: $1.13 billion
So, we come to the last three entries in this list, starting with Captain Marvel, the MCU version. Known as the MCU’s first women superhero with her own film, Captain Marvel was released in preparation for the epic Avengers: Endgame.
The film deviated from the standard origin stories that Marvel is known for. While many MCU fans were disappointed, many others rejoiced as it featured some beloved characters such as Nick Fury and Phil Coulson.
2. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Gross earnings: $1.13 billion
Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back with Far From Home. While in the first movie, he struggled with Homecoming, this time he really is far from home. Set in various places in Europe, this installment happens after the events of Endgame.
The game-changing events of Endgame gave this film a more heart-warming (and heart-wrenching) quality. Dealing with the aftermath, Peter Parker is left to discover more of his abilities and to figure out his life as a high school student and superhero.
1. Avengers: Endgame
Gross earnings: $2.8 billion
Topping this list is Avengers: Endgame. Picking up where Infinity War left off, Endgame offers a thrilling conclusion to the tumultuous events of Infinity War. We see our beloved superheroes deal with the aftermath of the previous film and take steps to make it right.
With the combined power of the MCUs most prominent heroes, this film definitely takes the cake with more than $2 billion in gross earnings. It also shows some of the most awaited character interactions and developments, making it a dream come true for fans.
With the popularity of superhero films, there is no doubt that these films garnered millions and billions. In the coming year, you can definitely expect to see more of these movies in cinemas.
